Non-profit work will never pay as much as the private sector. BMGF pays better than anyone else, but it still doesn't equal consulting for accenture, etc. So, the most important thing in choosing a non-profit is finding one where you can go in EVERY SINGLE DAY believing in the goals, and feeling like you are making a difference toward reaching them. If overseas work is going to make you feel detached from the community, BMGF is NOT a good place to work. On the other hand, if you feel like even the homeless in this city have it better than the abjectly poor in some other countries, you had best steer clear of United Way.

best place to live, work, and acquired Public Transportation in Seattle?
Looks like I might be attending UW Seattle this coming Fall 07, I just a good tip where I can find a good spot to find a place to stay with or without roommate, a place to find jobs as part-time student, and a convenient spot to park and ride public transportation. Commuting to/from/within Seattle absolutely sucks. You need to live as close to campus as possible. You can catch a bus to just about anywhere at Montlake.

The U-District, where the UW is, would probably be best. Anywhere within Seattle will give you what you are looking for, but the U-District is catered to students at the UW.

Actually, the public transportation system is not that bad. When I was finishing my degree there in 2003-2004 I commuted from quite a long distance away (past Tacoma!) and, with the bus lanes the commute wasn't too bad. One of the great benefits of you being a UW student is that you will, every quarter, receive a reduced fare student sticker that you just throw on your student card. You just flash that at the bus driver or sound transit ticket-taker and it's good for King and Pierce counties on Metro (Seattle Transit) or Sound Transit express buses (they were excluding Snohomish county at that time). Every day you'll be able to enjoy one mountain range to the east and one to the west. To the south is beautiful Mt. Rainier. When you're stuck in traffic, the view will compensate and inspire you. On Capitol Hill in Seattle, you'll likely find the most young and vibrant people. Many single people live there and many people walk or take the numerous buses or trolleys in that area. Also, Capitol Hill has probably the most coffeeshops per square inch of anyplace around.

Is it realistic to live in Downtown Seattle (Belltown, Queen Anne) and work in Kirkland? What would the commute be like and how long during typical business hours? Is there a method of Mass Transit like the Sky Train in Vancouver,BC that could get you around?

Between Seattle and Kirkland you have some great transit options. The best bet would be Metro express bus line #255 which operates daily express service along the highway 520 freeway between Downtown Seattle and Kirkland. The route runs frequently and the travel time is only about 30 minutes each way. The fare is only $1.50 during off peak times and $2.25 during rush hours with greater saving using a monthly pass. Good Luck!

I think it's a little silly to live downtown and work in Kirkland. If you're commuting during normal business hours, you are going to hit bumper to bumper traffic every single day morning and evening. Kirkland is just off SR 520 which is notorious for horrible traffic. Plus, they're planning on modifying it soon, so that'll be construction on top of traffic. I think you would be WAY better off to live in Kirkland. Kirkland is actually a really nice place and has a lively downtown area and waterfront. Of course, it's no Seattle, but it is less expensive to rent an apartment there, it's a good-sized city, and it has lots to do. Plus, it takes maybe 15 min. to get into downtown Seattle from Kirkland during non-commuting hours. If you live downtown and commute to Kirkland, count on tacking on at least 45 min. to an hour each way. That makes an 8 hour work day more like a 10 hour work day. There is a good bus system from downtown to the Eastside (Eastern suburbs of Seattle), but again that's adding time onto your commute. Of course, it's up to you, but if you want to live in Seattle, I would recommend finding a job downtown.

The commute would be terrible! It's the way that more traffic is running, heading east in the morning and west in the evening. Doing the opposite, living on the Eastside and commuting downtown would be more feasible, though 520 is not fun to cross either way at rush hour. It just gets pretty congested. The commute back to Seattle from the Eastside at rush hour is miserable and on 520, you need 3 people to be in the carpool lane, which will moderately help. In terms of mass transit, Metro does have buses that run from downtown to the Eastside and so does Sound Transit. The 255 runs from downtown to Kirkland, the Sound Transit 550 runs from downtown Bellevue into Seattle, and there are various buses that also run back and forth and to the University District. They will help, but the buses can only go as fast as the rest of the traffic will allow, so it's not perfect. It's WAY less frustrating to let the bus driver take it, though! You could also realistically bike around the lake on the Burke-Gilman Trail from downtown to Seattle and only will intersect with automobiles at a few intersections, avoiding car traffic for the most part

i worked for comcast but knew a lot of people that did directv up here. You will learn to work with the weather, it will get cold and went in the fall and winter and it will get hot in the summer. All the people I knew that worked for directv like and they made good money the only thing they complained about was they had a lot of driving from job to job and there were a good amount of jobs they couldn't do because the trees up here blocked the line of sight. Other than that they all like it.

What is a good neighboorhood (close to Downtown) to live in Seattle for a young couple?
Hi, I will mostly likely be working in Seattle next year for a company just South of I-90 (North Beacon Hill). I am looking for a place to rent that is: - safe - clean - at most a 20 min commute to the area by the Pac Med - relatively cheap ($1000-1200 ideal, but 1600 ok if its foxy) - either newly built or remodeled I am not looking neccesarily for a particular complex. I want to know what the best neighboorhoods are that sound like a young, adventurous couple would like it there (and roughly match the criteria above).

Hi Brock...consider either the Capital Hill, Queen Anne or Belltown neighbourhoods all have new and old structures blended in together. Additionally, many young people are concentrated in these three communities mostly and they are close to downtown and not too far of a commute to Pac Med as well. Crime varies all over Seattle, however in these two communities it isn't as prevalent in other communities such as south Seattle. Consider browsing through the local Craigslist housing http://seattle.craigslist.org/hhh/ to help get a feel for rent.

About paramedic work in seattle area

Paramedic work in seattle area??
Hi- Moving to Seattle from the east coast in the next 6 months and wondering what kind of paramedic opportunies are avaiable? Currentley working for AMR and may try to transfer to the Seattle area. Any advice? I've mostly worked in private (911 and transfer). Thanks!

From what I understand, all Seattle 911 calls are handled by the Seattle Fire Department. They actually put any newly hired paramedics through their own paramedic training school. Seems like a really big pain to me. They have a really good reputation, though. You might try getting a job with a non emergency transport service, but what fun is that? Other counties in Washington state will use private ambulance services. You just have to ask around and find out which counties are hiring. There's always jobs to be had as ER techs in local hospitals. Hope this helps!

AMR does not have Medics in Seattle they have the contract with the city to provide BLS only. AMR and Rural Metro in Tacoma hire Medics activly. Also AMR in Spokane hires Medics for its 911 contract. You should find work other than AMR. AMRs leadership team is a train wreck.

Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe (HEWM) in the San Francisco headquarters has a huge IP dept. with many IP attorneys in their other branches (Seattle being one), though not as many. The San Diego branch, though smaller, is made up of a lot of IP attys b/c of the huge biotech boom there. Seattle had more environmental attys than anything (seems to be the trend for the whole state), but still had IP attys there. HEWM is well known as a 1st class firm within all the CA atty's I've talked to, evoking an ooh and ahh about the firm.

Here's a short list of jobs which you can create to generate income: 1. Learn calligraphy so that you can provide handwritten invitations and thank you notes to prospective wedding parties, birthday celebrations, etc. Seek out clients through wedding planners at nearby churches and temples. A starter calligraphy kit usually runs around $20 and anyone can easily pick up this skill. The going rate is usually $1 per hand addressed item. 2. Become a "poser" who assists wedding photographers in setting and arranging various individuals in group and single photographic positions. "Posers" carry around a sketch book of various sitting and standing poses which consists of onion skin overlays of various wedding pictures bound in albums. Again, contact local wedding photographers and wedding planners, accordingly. The hourly pay is around $10-$12 per hour and you are often invited to attend all dining activities. 3. Seek from your neighbors a gardner position which involves planting, weed removal, plant/tree trimming, light brush clearance. You will be using the neighbor's equipment and tools. Again, do not represent yourself as a lawn mower since there are any number of safety issues involved. A door-to-door solicitation of surrounding neighbors is required and you can charge between $6 to $9 per hour. 4. Offer policing/removal or clearance of trash services to surrounding neighbors which involve trash pickup within nearby residential area. Limit the extent of pickup to small areas and be aware that there are no hazardous terrain or elements involved in this process. Again, a door-to-door solicitation of neighbors is in order. You can charge between $6.75 to $7.50 per hour. 5. Acquire a set of window cleaning tools [a bucket, liquid window cleaner, sponge, squeegee, handle with an extension and a small step ladder] and solicit local businesses for your window cleaning services. However, be careful to limit the height of the window cleaning to no higher than one story. Charge $1 per window panel. 6. Become a proxy/stand-in for neighbors to allow delivery of goods and packages to your home/apartment. Acquire the authority to sign any receipt of incoming packages as an accepting neighbor. Charge $1 per each package handled by you. 7. Consider becoming a restaurant-cafe customer liaison by using your cell phone at restaurants-cafes to coordinate with the hostess to keep track of waiting customers. Whenever there's a very long period of time to activate a waiting list, you want to offer the restaurant your services so that customers do not have to stand around for any lengthy period of time. And when their name/assigned number comes up; you can call the upcoming customer's cell phone to tell them that they can return to the restaurant and be served. The call back fee is usually around $0.50 cents on a per head basis. For example, a couple would be charged $1.00 while children under 6 would not be charged. Placement of a plaque which outlines your fee schedule near the hostess station is sufficient to garner attention of prospective customers who will value your services since they can do other activities outside of the restaurant -- often beyond the range of any inhouse paging system. You realize that everyone has a cellphone and why not take advantage of the connectivity to make the diner's experience worthwhile. The restaurant will also appreciate the added service you are providing as a customer liaison. 8. Why not become a paid feeder servicing the disabled at nearby nursing, convalescent, assisted living/care centers and hospitals. It involves feeding food to patients who are unable to feed themselves. The starting rate is $8.00 per hour. The only downside is that one has to take precautions to wash one's hands after each feeding. A posting of your services [by a business card or flyer] on a reviewable bulletin board would be enough to generate customers. The paid feeder position is one of the fastest growing occupation at this time. Good luck!

If you're low income, then you can sign up for the Summer Youth Employment program. They provide jobs for youths between the ages of 13 - 18 only in the summer. First of all, only get black shirts, pants don't matter that much because you'll be wearing an apron that covers most of it. (in the beginning, you will spill a lot). Even I still sometimes spill things. Try going to places like Winners or Old Navy. You can try American Eagle too. My dress shirt is from Gap, so you can try there as well. For shoes, since you'll be standing for a really long time, get comfortable ones. Don't worry about non-slip shoes because there will be large rubber mats on the floor to prevent that (with the exception of the 30 minutes when they will be moved to be cleaned). I got my black shoes at Wal-Mart, and they're really comfortable! Also, you should ask for a Christmas promo T-shirt from your manager. You're allowed to wear promo T-shirts on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
